Why Your Breaker Keeps Tripping (and What to Do About It)

A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job. It's not broken, it's not "too sensitive" — it's telling you something is wrong on the circuit it protects, and you need to figure out what before you reset it again.

There are three causes, in order of how common they are for a first-time homeowner:

  1. Overload — too many things drawing power at once on the same circuit
  2. Short circuit — a hot wire is touching a neutral or ground somewhere it shouldn't
  3. Ground fault — current is leaking to ground, often through water

How a circuit breaker actually works (the 30-second version)

A circuit breaker is a switch that automatically opens when the current going through it exceeds a safe amount. There are two ways it can trip:

  • Thermal (overload): the breaker has a bimetallic strip inside that bends as it heats up. If too much current flows for too long, the strip bends enough to mechanically open the switch. This is the "everything is fine for a few minutes, then it trips" mode. The strip is also why a breaker feels slightly warm to the touch when it's loaded near capacity — that's normal, not a sign of failure.
  • Magnetic (short circuit): a sudden surge of current (a hot wire touching neutral or ground) creates a strong magnetic field inside the breaker that physically yanks the switch open almost instantly. This is the "I reset it and it tripped the second my finger left the switch" mode.

Older homes may also have AFCI breakers (arc-fault circuit interrupters), which trip on a third condition: arcing, which is a small spark happening across a damaged wire or loose connection. AFCIs are required by code for bedroom circuits in most US jurisdictions since 1999 and have been expanding to more circuits since.

GFCI protection is a separate thing — it can live either in a breaker or in an outlet. It trips on tiny current leaks to ground, which is what saves you from being electrocuted in a wet environment.

Knowing which kind of breaker you have matters mostly for the next part: figuring out which of the three things (overload, short, ground fault) is happening on your circuit.

Step-by-step: figure out why your breaker keeps tripping

Work through these in order. Stop and call a pro at any point that says so.

1. Find the affected circuit and note what's on it

Open your breaker panel. The tripped breaker will be between ON and OFF — not fully OFF, but visibly misaligned with the rest. Some panels have a small red or orange indicator window that shows on the tripped breaker.

Before you reset it, walk through your house and note every outlet, light, and hardwired device on that circuit. The fastest way to find out is to flip the breaker off, then walk around with a lamp plugged into each outlet. The outlets that don't have power are on the circuit.

Common things per circuit in a typical house:

  • Kitchen counter outlets — fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, kettle (often 2 circuits)
  • Bathroom — hair dryer, curling iron, electric toothbrush charger

  • Laundry — washer, dryer (dryer is usually its own 30A circuit)
  • Living room — TV, game console, lamps
  • Office — computer, monitor, printer, anything else you plugged in last week

2. Rule out the easy stuff first

Unplug everything on the circuit. Yes, everything — including phone chargers, the slow cooker, the phone you forgot you had plugged in behind the couch.

Reset the breaker (push it fully to OFF, then back to ON).

Wait 5 minutes. If it doesn't trip, the problem was an overload — too many things drawing power at the same time. The fix is to spread the load across circuits, not keep stacking things on one.

A rule of thumb: a typical 15A circuit can handle about 1,800 watts. A hair dryer alone is 1,500. Add anything else — even a phone charger — and you're over.

3. Plug things back in one at a time

If the breaker held with everything unplugged, you're looking for a specific device. Plug things back in one at a time, resetting the breaker each time and waiting 5 minutes.

When the breaker trips, the last thing you plugged in is the culprit. Test it in a different outlet on a different circuit. If it works there, the original outlet is the problem. If it trips the breaker there too, the device itself is faulty — stop using it.

Common offenders:

  • Old space heaters
  • Window AC units (especially at startup)
  • Keurigs, espresso machines, anything with a heating element
  • Power strips with too many things on them

4. Check for short circuits

If the breaker trips immediately after you reset it, with nothing plugged in, you're dealing with a short. This is the one that's not a DIY job in most cases, but you can isolate it.

Unplug everything. Open each outlet and switch on the circuit (the one device per outlet is fine — leave the cover plates off). Look for:

  • Scorch marks around the outlet — that outlet is shorting. Replace it.
  • Loose wires touching the metal box — the wire nut came off, or the screw terminal is loose. Re-secure it.
  • A "backstab" connection where the wire was pushed into a hole on the back of the outlet instead of wrapped around the screw — these fail. Move it to the screw terminal.

A note on "backstabs": most builder-grade outlets installed before 2015 push the wires into holes on the back instead of wrapping them around screws. This is faster for the installer and less reliable for you. If you open an outlet and see wires going into holes in the back, move them to the screw terminals while you're in there. Prevents future failures.

If you don't see an obvious problem, the short is inside a wall, in a light fixture, or in an appliance. Time to call an electrician. This is not a "watch a YouTube video and try harder" situation.

5. Test GFCI outlets separately

If the tripping breaker is for a kitchen, bathroom, garage, or outdoor circuit, look for a GFCI outlet somewhere on that circuit. GFCIs are the outlets with the TEST and RESET buttons in the middle.

A GFCI outlet can cause the upstream breaker to trip if it's failing. Press RESET on every GFCI you can find. If the breaker still trips, the GFCI itself may be the problem — replace it ($15, 10 minutes, beginner-friendly).

6. Look for water

If the breaker trips after it rains, after a lot of cooking, or when something runs for a long time (dishwasher, washing machine), water is the most likely cause. Common spots:

  • Outdoor outlet with a missing or damaged cover
  • Sprinkler hitting an outdoor box
  • A roof leak dripping onto a junction box in the attic
  • A bathroom fan venting into the attic instead of outside

Stop using the affected circuit until the water source is fixed and everything is dry. An electrician can test for current leakage with a multimeter.

What if it still doesn't work?

If you've done all of the above and the breaker still trips:

  • The breaker itself is failing. Breakers wear out. If the panel is older than 15 years, this is plausible. Electrician swap: $100-200.

Call a licensed electrician — no exceptions — if any of the following are true:

  • The breaker trips the instant you reset it, with nothing plugged in
  • You smell burning plastic, see scorch marks, or notice discoloration on the panel
  • The panel feels warm to the touch
  • You have aluminum wiring and anything is acting up
  • The panel is Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic
